For making a "braid" cast on, the stitches should be multiplied in 11 + 2 stitches for symmetry, alongside 2 selvedge stitches.

Row Instructions

Rows 1, 3, 7, and 9

RND 1: *2 purls, 9 knit stitches*, 2 purls;

Row 2 and All Even Rows

RND 2: 2 knit stitches, *9 purls, 2 knit stitches*;

Row 5

RND 5: *2 purls, 3, 4, 5 draw front on the auxiliary needle, knit the 6th, 7th, and 8th stitches, then knit the 3rd, 4th, and 5th stitches, 3 knit stitches*, 2 purls;

Row 11

RND 11: *2 purls, 3 knit stitches, 6, 7, 8 draw back on the auxiliary needle, knit the 9th, 10th, and 11th stitches, then knit the 6th, 7th, and 8th stitches from the auxiliary needle*, 2 purls.

Continue to repeat from the 1st row for your desired effect.
