Pattern Notes
This washcloth can be made in any size. Chain any multiple of 4 plus 1 of chains to make it wider or narrower, and adjust the number of rows to make it longer or shorter.
The ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
Written Instructions (White Mitt & Pink Hearts)
With White, Ch 17 or any multiple of 4 plus 1.
Round Instructions
Rd 1: Hhdc in the second chain and each chain across. You should have 16 stitches at the end of the row. Turn and continue working into the unworked loops on the other side of the foundation chain, making 16 more stitches.
Connect the round to the first stitch with a slip stitch. (Total: 32 stitches in this and every round.)
Rd 2: Ch 1 and turn. Hhdc in first St and each St around. Connect round to first St with Sl st.
Tip: If you have trouble finding the first stitch to join the round, make the first Hhdc and place a marker right behind it. Continue working around, and when you reach the marker, join the round at that spot. See the photo for reference.
Repeat Rd 2 until you have approx. 6.5 inches in length. Here, you can make them longer if you prefer before you start with the hearts.
Note: Take a quick stitch count at the end of each round to ensure you have the same number of stitches each time. It’s easy to accidentally skip or add a stitch, especially in the first few rounds. If your mitt starts looking narrower or wider, that might be the reason. The total number of stitches should be divisible by four so the hearts work out nicely in the last round!
Hearts Round
Still using White, Ch 1, and do not turn for this round. Work a DC in the first stitch and join the pink colour in the last step of the DC, here is how: YO, insert the hook into the first stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops – you’ll have two loops left on your hook. Now, take the pink yarn and pull it through to complete the stitch. Continue working with the pink colour for the rest of the round. Leave the white yarn in place and do not cut it, as it will be needed for the next round.
Work 4 DC into the next stitch, skip 3 stitches, then place 4 DC in the fourth stitch. Continue working 4 DC in every fourth stitch around. Slip stitch to the first stitch to join the round.
Last Round
Switch to White, Ch 1, and turn. Look at the row below in white – you’ll see three skipped stitches between the DC clusters. *Insert your hook into the middle skipped stitch in that row and work a SC, Ch 2, then SC between the second and third DC, Ch 2. Repeat this pattern from * around. Slip stitch to join the round.
Note: Check the photos above – when switching back to White, you’ll see a white strand running from one round to the next. Use this side as the wrong side of your mitt and weave in all ends on this side.
Loop
Ch 20 (or less for a shorter loop), then slip stitch into the same stitch.
Fasten off and weave in all ends on the wrong side of the mitt. I hope you really enjoy making this bath mitt!
