Difficulty:
Easy Intermediate
Techniques Used: working in the 3rd loop of a half-double crochet, cluster stitches, post stitches, shells

Materials Needed:

455 (1140, 1395, 1975, 2300, 3040, 3860) yards #4 worsted weight Caron Jumbo Ombre in “Sepia” or color of your choice (Red Heart With Love, and Caron One Pound are all good ones to substitute with, if you like). This number includes the extra yarn yardage counts for the blanket edging.
(If hacking your yarn like I did you may wish to buy 1/3 more yarn than you will actually need)
6.5mm (J) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
Yarn Needle
Scissors
Stitch markers

Yarn winder (for hacking yarn)

Stitches Used:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
BPsc = back post single crochet
BPhdc = back post half double crochet

Additional Terms:
hdc in the 3rd loop = Look at the top of the stitch, and locate the sideways “V”, bend the stitch to look at the back, and you should see another “V”. You’ll be working into the back loop of that “V”, this is called the 3rd loop.
3dc cluster = YO, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, YO, draw through 2 loops (1st stitch of cluster made), YO, insert hook into same st, pull up a loop, YO draw through 2 loops (2nd st of cluster made), YO, insert hook into same st, pull up a loop, YO draw through 2 loops (3rd st of cluster made), YO, draw through all loops on hook.
st/sts = stitch/stitches
sp/sps = space/spaces
sk = skip
prev = previous

Gauge:
Circle should measure 8″ across after round 9.

Measurements:
Approximate diameter before blanket edging is added. Blanket edging adds 2 additional inches to total diameter.
Lovey: 22″
Baby blanket: 36″
Receiving Blanket: 40″
Toddler blanket: 48″
Crib blanket: 52″
Small throw blanket: 60″
Large throw blanket: 68″

Additional Notes:
-ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch.
-While I have used an ombré yarn to create this blanket, I never recommend using shorter striping variegated yarns because they will hide the pretty textures.
*Stitch markers are going to save you so much time and headache in this pattern, especially in the rounds that have alternating increases.* Use them liberally. Your sanity will thank you later.
-Having trouble getting your counts right? Have you remembered stitch markers?
-Twin, Double, Queen, and King sizes are included in the paid PDF pattern on Ravelry.
-To get your blanket looking like mine you will need to do some yarn hacking. I used the equivalent yardage of just under 3 skeins of yarn for the blanket in the picture, but I ended up using parts of a 4th skein to get my colors to fade the way I wanted. Use the remaining yarn to crochet the matching Cake Shop Cushions to complete the set!

LAYER CAKE ROUND LACY BABY BLANKET PATTERN (US TERMS):

If you want to have an ombré effect you will need to do some work before you start crocheting.
1. Wind your yarn into small cakes by color section. The transitions between each color are pretty clear, but you will want to be working in a room with plenty of light for this project.
2. Determine how you want your colors to transition, for example, brown to light pink, or vice-versa. The lightest pink hue is pretty short since it is supposed to be a “go-between” for the pink and white colors. In my opinion, the white does not match as nicely with the rest of the colors in the skein so if you want to leave that color out entirely, or use it only on the outside border (like I did), feel free.

Round 1: 6 sc in magic circle, join with sl st to first sc. (6)
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc. (12)
Round 3: ch 1, (3dc cluster, ch 1) in each st around, join with sl st to first 3dc cluster. (12 3dc clusters, 12 ch-1 sps)
Round 4: ch 1, 3 hdc in each ch-1 sp around, join with sl st to first hdc. (36)
Round 5: ch 1, working in 3rd loop of hdc, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (48)
Round 6: *sk st, 4 dc in next st, sk st, sl st in next st; repeat from * around, final sl st counts as join. (12 shells)
Round 7: ch 1, *work the following sts across each shell: BPhdc around first st, BPsc around next 2 sts, BPhdc around next st, move to next shell; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first hdc. (48)

You have now completed the stitches that you will be using for the rest of the blanket. Each remaining round will be a variation on these stitches.

Round 8: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (60)
Round 9: ch 1, *3dc cluster, ch 1, sk st; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first 3dc cluster. (30 3dc clusters, 30 ch-1 sps)

Your circle should measure just a smidgen over 8” across at this point.

In the following round you will be alternating the stitches between your increases. Stitches will be worked in the top of the clusters and in the ch-1 sps. This will be the case each time you see the round repeat (the next one will be in round 16).

Round 10: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first hdc. (84)
Round 11: ch 1, working in 3rd loop of hdc, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 6 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (96)
Round 12: *sk st, 4 dc in next st, sk st, sl st in next st; repeat from * around, final sl st counts as join. (24 shells)
Round 13: ch 1, *work the following sts across each shell: BPhdc around first st, BPsc around next 2 sts, BPhdc around next st, move to next shell; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first BPhdc. (96)
Round 14: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 7 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (108)
Round 15: ch 1, *3dc cluster, ch 1, sk st; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first 3dc cluster. (54 3dc clusters, 54 ch-1 sps)

In the following round you will be alternating the stitches between your increases. Remember to work your stitches both in the tops of the clusters and in the chain-1 sps! You may wish to use stitch markers to help you keep track of this. It will become more and more helpful to mark your stitches each time you see this round repeat (Rounds 22, 28, 34, 40, etc).

Round 16: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first hdc. (132)
Round 17: ch 1, working in 3rd loop of hdc, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 10 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (144)
Round 18: *sk st, 4 dc in next st, sk st, sl st in next st; repeat from * around, final sl st counts as join. (36 shells)
Round 19: ch 1, *work the following sts across each shell: BPhdc around first st, BPsc around next 2 sts, BPhdc around next st, move to next shell; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first BPhdc. (144)
Round 20: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 11 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 11 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (156)
Round 21: ch 1, *3dc cluster, ch 1, sk st; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first 3dc cluster. (78 3dc clusters, 78 ch-1 sps)

Ready to mark those increases?

Round 22: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 6 sts, * 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 6 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first hdc. (180 hdc)

Blanket should measure approximately 20” across

Blanket Edging all sizes:
If you want to add an extra fancy ruffled edging to your blanket here’s how you will do that. This step will add about 2″ to the diameter of your blanket and it will cause the edges to ruffle just a little bit. It you prefer your blanket lay perfectly flat then you can leave this section off.
Round 1: *work the following sts across each shell: BPhdc around first st, BPsc around next 2 sts, BPhdc around next st, move to next shell; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first BPhdc. (Stitch count equals the last shell round worked x 4)
Round 2: *sk st, 3 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, sl st between the two BPhdc stitches that are side-by-side in prev round; repeat from * around, final sl st counts as join.

Fasten off, weave in ends.
