Complete Guide to Crocheting a Stylish Seafoam Scarf with Unique Stitches

You’ll Need:

4 skeins of Red Heart Chunky Soft, colorway “Seafoam” (yarn weight: bulky 5);

Crochet hook 10 mm;

Yarn needle;

Scissors.

Size:

Without blocking: approx. 24cm wide x 215 cm long, excluding fringe.

For a longer scarf, start with more foundation chain stitches.

For a wider scarf, add more rows in the pattern repeat.

Multiple: 2 (add 1 chain more for the foundation chain)

Stitches Control:

8 sc = 10 cm.

Special Stitches

Back Cross Double Crochet (bcrdc):

Skip 1 stitch, work 1 double crochet into the next stitch, then work 1 double crochet back into the skipped stitch going behind the last double crochet just made.

Front Cross Double Crochet (fcrdc):

Skip 1 stitch, work 1 double crochet into the next stitch, then work 1 double crochet back into the skipped stitch going in front of the last double crochet just made, so as not to catch it.

Instructions

Start with 173 chains.

Row 1: Work an entire row into the back bump of the starting chains: 1 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and 1 single crochet in each chain across. (172 sc)

Row 2: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn; 1 single crochet in first single crochet and 1 single crochet in each single crochet across. (172 sc)

Row 3: (Back cross double crochet row): Chain 3 or chain starting double crochet (csdc, will count as the first double crochet), turn, 1 double crochet in next single crochet, work back cross double crochet stitches across the row to the last 2 stitches, ending the row with 1 double crochet into each of the last 2 stitches.

(You will have 84 crossed stitches total between 2 double crochet stitches at the beginning and 2 double crochet at the end of the row.)

Row 4: (Front cross double crochet row): Chain 3 or chain starting double crochet (csdc, count as first double crochet), turn, 1 double crochet in next single crochet, work front cross double crochet stitches across the row to the last 2 stitches, ending the row with 1 double crochet into each of the last 2 stitches.

(You will have 84 crossed stitches total between 2 double crochet stitches at the beginning and 2 double crochet at the end of the row.)

When alternating a row of back cross double crochet (row 3) with a row of front cross double crochet (row 4), you get a braid-like appearance when rotating the scarf to be vertical.

If you work correctly, the front cross double crochet stitches should align with the back cross double crochet stitches!

Rows 5 - 6: (Single crochet rows): Chain 1, turn, 1 single crochet into the same stitch and 1 single crochet in each stitch across the row. (172 sc)

Rows 7- 18: Repeat rows 3 - 6.

Essentially, you will alternate 2 rows of single crochet stitches with 1 row of back cross stitches and 1 row of front cross stitches, ending with 2 rows of single crochet stitches. Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Adding Fringe

Cut lengths of yarn 38 cm long. Taking 2 strands together, knot into fringe evenly across each end of the scarf.

Trim fringe evenly.
