Mastering Special Stitches in Crochet: A Guide to Cluster Stitches for Your Projects

Special Stitches

Cluster4 (CL4) = work 3 double crochets (dc) over the stem of the dc just worked, but leaving the last loop of each dc on the hook. Then work a 4th dc as indicated, leaving the last loop as before (5 loops on the hook). Yarn over (yo) and pull through all 5 loops.

Stitch Quantities

The quantity of stitches is a multiple of 3 plus 5.

Instructions for Rows

1st Row (Right Side)

Work 1 dc into the 6th chain from the hook, *3 chains (ch), skip 2 ch, work Cluster4 placing the 4th dc into the next ch; repeat from * to the last 2 ch, 3 ch, work Cluster4 placing the 4th dc in the last ch, then turn.

2nd Row

3 ch (count as 1 dc), and 1 dc into the next 3 ch space. *3 ch, work Cluster4 placing the 4th dc into the next 3 ch space; repeat from * to the end, placing the final dc into the top of the ch at the beginning of the previous row, then turn.

Repeat Rows

Repeat the 2nd row for continued pattern consistency.
