Create Your Own Beautiful Crochet Simple Spiral Doily - Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction to Crochet Spirals

Crocheting a simple spiral is a delightful and relaxing way to create unique and charming pieces. The best part about crocheting a spiral is the endless possibilities it offers – you can create anything from coasters and mandalas to intricate designs for blankets or bags. So, grab your crochet hook, pick out some colorful yarn, and let your creativity flow as you embark on the mesmerizing journey of crocheting a simple spiral!

Rounds and Materials

Work as many rounds as necessary:

12 rounds - cotton 4 ply

20 rounds - cotton thread

Material Specifications

In the examples above, the smaller spiral is crocheted in Patons 100% Cotton 4Ply with a 3.00 mm hook. Here, I've worked 12 rounds and the piece measures 4¾"/12 cm across. I've given full instructions for up to 20 rounds if you want to make it bigger.

I've worked 20 rounds for my spiral on the dark blue background, which is made with Puppets Eldorado size 10 cotton thread and a 1.75 mm hook. The finished piece measures just over 5½"/14 cm across.

As you will read below, you can work more than 20 rounds but I think the length of the chain will limit how big you can make this piece without it getting out of control shape-wise :)

To weave in your working end, tie off and weave end from front to back under the top 2 loops of the sc you joined into. Then weave into the back as usual.

Working Further Rounds

Now that you know how the pattern works - how to join, ss next stitch, ch 1, and start from there, work 2 stitches into the space and miss the first sc - it's easy for you to continue for a little longer.

The thing is, I'm not sure at what point the length of the chain makes the whole piece take on a life of its own with the chain part getting rather straggly and out of shape.

Depends also on the type of yarn you are using.

Instructions for Rounds 21-30 and Beyond

Here are the instructions for going up to Round 30 - and beyond!

The spiral increases by one stitch every round, and we increase the chain by one every two rounds.

So in Round 19 we were crocheting 10 chain and 18 stitches - our first stitch, then the next 15, then the 2 into the space. After that for the repeat, we crocheted 16 stitches and 2 into the space.

For Round 20, we also crocheted 10 chain - and increased to 19 stitches.

For the next ten rounds, for example, we would have the following:

  • Round 21: 11 chain, 20 stitches
  • Round 22: 11 chain, 21 stitches
  • Round 23: 12 chain, 22 stitches
  • Round 24: 12 chain, 23 stitches
  • Round 25: 13 chain, 24 stitches
  • Round 26: 13 chain, 25 stitches
  • Round 27: 14 chain, 26 stitches
  • Round 28: 14 chain, 27 stitches
  • Round 29: 15 chain, 28 stitches
  • Round 30: 15 chain, 29 stitches
