Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm, 8 or 5 mm

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge18 sts and 24 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

Materials:

  • Sizes 4½ mm (U.S. 7) and 5 mm (U.S. 8) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 2 st holders

Chest/bust measurement
Small 33 ins [81 cm ]; Medium 36 ins [91.5 cm ]; Large 39 ins [96.5 cm ]; Extra-Large 41 ins [101.5 cm ]

Finished chest/bust
Small 36½ ins [91.5 cm ]; Medium 39 ins [99 cm ]; Large 42½ ins [106.5 cm ]; Extra-Large 45 ins [114.5 cm ]

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).


Back

**With smaller needles and MC, cast on 81 (88-95-102) sts.
1st row:(RS). K4. *P3. K4. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row:P4. *K3. P4. Rep from * to end of row.
These 2 rows form rib pat.
Work a further 11 rows in rib pat.
Sizes S and L only: Next row: (WS). Rib, inc 1 sts at centre of row. 82 (96) sts.
All Sizes: Change to larger needles and proceed in Stripe Pat as follows:
With A, work 2 rows stocking st.
With MC work 6 rows stocking st.
These 8 rows form Stripe Pat.
Work even in pat until Back from beg measures 12¼ (12¼-12½-12½) ins [31 (31-32-32) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.

Armhole shaping: Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, cast off 7 (8-8-9) sts beg next 2 rows. 68 (72-80-84) sts.
Dec 1 st each end of needle on next 3 rows, then on every following alt row 6 (7-7-7) times. 50 (52-60-64) sts.**
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 8 (8¼-8¼-8¾) ins [20 (21-21-22) cm], ending with RS.

Shoulder shaping: Cast off 4 (5-6-7) sts beg next 2 rows, then 5 (5-7-8) sts beg next 2 rows. Leave rem 32 (32-34-34) sts on st holder.

Front

Work from ** to ** as given for Back.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 5 (5-5½-6) ins [12.5 (12.5-14-15) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.

Neck shaping: Next row:K14 (15-18-20). Turn. Leave rem sts on st holder.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 2 rows, then every following alt row 3 times. 9 (10-13-15) sts.
Work even in pat until work from beg measures same length as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with same row of Stripe Pattern as Back and the RS facing for next row.

Shoulder shaping: Cast off 4 (5-6-7) sts beg next row.
Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 5 (5-7-8) sts. With RS facing, slip next 22 (22-24-24) sts onto a st holder. Join yarn to rem sts and knit to end of row.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 2 rows, then every following alt row 3 times. 9 (10-13-15) sts.
Work even in pat until work from beg measures same length as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with same row of Stripe Pattern as Back and the WS facing for next row.

Shoulder shaping: Cast off 4 (5-6-7) sts beg next row.
Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 5 (5-7-8) sts.
Finishing
Pin garment pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth leaving to dry.

Collar: Sew right shoulder seam.
With RS of work facing, smaller needles and MC, pick up and knit 19 sts down Left Front neck edge, K22 (22-24-24) from Front st holder dec 0 (0-2-2) sts evenly across.
Pick up and knit 19 sts up Right Front neck edge. K32 (32-34-34) from Back st holder, dec 1 (1-3-3) st(s) evenly across. 91 sts.
1st row:(WS). *P3. K4. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row:*K3. P4. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep these 2 rows of (K3. P4) ribbing for 4 ins [10 cm], ending with RS of Collar (WS of body) facing for next row.
Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:
Next row:*P2. M1P (by picking up horizontal loop lying before next st and purling into back of it). P1. K4. Rep from * to end of row. 104 sts.
Next row:*P4. K4. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last row until Collar from pick up row measures 10¾ ins [26 cm]. Cast off in ribbing.
Sew left shoulder and Collar seam, reversing Collar seam for turn-back.

Armbands:With RS of work facing, smaller needles and MC, pick up and knit 83 (86-88-92) sts. evenly along armhole edge.
Knit 2 rows. Cast off knitways (WS). Sew side and armband seams.
