Complete Guide to Knitting a Mohair Sweater


You’ll Need:
350 (400) 450g of yarn with mohair content (130m/50g);
Knitting needles size 3.5.
Size:
XS (S) M.
Length – 72 cm.
Used Patterns:
- 2 x 2 rib;
- Relief pattern: the quantity of stitches is multiplied 16 + 1 selvedge stitch. Work according to the scheme. In wrong-side rows, all stitches are made according to the ornament, yarn overs – as purls. Repeat 1st-8th rows.
- Wrong side: in right-side rows – purls, in wrong-side rows – knit stitches.
Stitches Control:
On relief pattern: 23 stitches x 31 rows = 10 x 10 cm square.
Instructions:
Back:
Cast on 114 (122) 130 stitches and work with rib, starting with the wrong-side row: 1 selvedge stitch, *1 knit stitch, 2 purls, 1 knit stitch*; repeat from * to * to end of row, and finish with 1 selvedge stitch.
In 6 cm, turn to relief pattern: 1 selvedge stitch, 7 pattern repeats, (1 selvedge stitch, 4 stitches before pattern repeat, 7 pattern repeats, 4 stitches after it, 1 selvedge stitch), 1 selvedge stitch, 8 pattern repeats, 1 selvedge stitch.
Then, knit straight for 61 cm. Bind off 5 stitches twice from both sides for shoulders, then, bind off 5 stitches twice in a row and 6 (7) 8 stitches four times.
Simultaneously, after 63 cm, bind off the central 18 stitches for the neck-hole. Continue knitting each part from a separate skein. For smooth rounding, bind off 3 stitches three times in every even row.
Left Front:
Cast on 39 (43) 47 stitches and make rib, starting with the wrong-side row: 1 selvedge stitch, *1 knit stitch, 2 purls, 1 knit stitch*; repeat from * to * to end of row, and finish with 1 selvedge stitch.
In 6 cm, turn to relief pattern: 1 selvedge stitch, 2 pattern repeats, 4 stitches after it, 1 purl, 1 selvedge stitch, (1 selvedge stitch, 4 stitches before pattern repeat, 2 pattern repeats, 4 stitches after it, 1 purl, 1 selvedge stitch), 1 selvedge stitch, 2 pattern repeats, 1st-13th stitches of pattern repeat once, 1 selvedge stitch.
Then, continue working to the needed height – refer to the schemes. For shoulder chamfers, repeat the scheme of the back.
Right Front:
Make in reflection to the left front.
Sleeves:
Cast on 50 (54) 54 stitches and make rib, starting with the wrong-side row: 1 selvedge stitch, *1 knit stitch, 2 purls, 1 knit stitch*; repeat from * to * to end of row, and finish with 1 selvedge stitch.
For sleeves widening, increase 1 stitch ten times from both sides in every 8th row, 1 stitch ten times in every 6th row, 1 stitch ten, (1 stitch four in every 8th row, 1 stitch eighteen in every 6th row). 1 stitch twenty in every 6th row, and 1 stitch four in every 4th row. There should be 90 (98) 106 stitches on the knitting needles.
Bind off the stitches at 47 (46) 45 cm height.
Assembly:
Make shoulder seams. Lift 404 stitches for the placket: 180 stitches on each front, 44 stitches along the neck-hole, and back.
Make rib, starting from the wrong-side row: 1 selvedge stitch, *2 purls, 2 knit stitches*; repeat from * to *, finishing with 2 purls, 1 selvedge stitch.
After 6 cm, bind off the stitches as per the ornament. Sew the sleeves and finish with side and sleeve seams.
