Materials Needed

This doily is worked in sports weight yarn and a 3 mm hook. It measures 10"/25 cm across.

Pattern Instructions

For those of us using UK terminology:

  • sc = UK dc
  • dc = UK tr
  • trc = UK dtr

Starting the Doily

Start with a magic ring.

Round 1

ch 4 (does not count as a stitch); 18 trc into ring; close ring gently; do not join into the 4 ch but ss into the 1st trc worked. (18 sts worked.)

Tighten the Ring

Tighten the ring.

Round 2

ch 1, sc into the same stitch.

(Ch 3, sc into next stitch) 17 times; ch 3, ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops worked.)

Continue Rounds

Round 3

ss into 1st 3 ch loop; ch 1, sc into same loop.

(Ch 3, sc into next loop) 17 times; ch 3, ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops worked.)

Round 4

ss into 1st 3 ch loop; ch 1, sc into same loop.

(Ch 4, sc into next loop) 17 times; ch 4, ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops worked.)

Round 5

ss into each of the next two chains of the 1st loop; 1 sc into the same loop.

(Ch 4, sc into next loop) 17 times; ch 4, ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops worked.)

Round 6

ss into 1st loop; ch 1, 5 sc into the same loop.

(5 sc into next loop) 17 times; ss into 1st sc to join. (18 groups of 5 stitches.)

Round 7

ch 1, sc into the same stitch.

(Ch 4, skip next 3 stitches, sc into each of the next 2 stitches) 17 times.

Ch 4, skip next 3 stitches, sc into the next stitch; ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops each separated by 2 stitches.)

Round 8

ss into 1st loop; ch 3 (counts as 1 dc); 5 dc into the same loop.

6 dc into each of the next 17 loops around; ss into top of 3 ch to join. (18 groups of 6 stitches.)

Round 9

In Round 9 we work into the spaces between the groups of 6 dc:

ss into space below hook.

Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc); 2 dc into the same space.

(Ch 4, skip next group of 6 stitches, 3 dc into next space) 17 times; ch 4, ss into top of 3 ch to join. (18 loops separated by groups of 3 stitches.)

Here's the start of Round 9 for you in pictures:

Round 9: 1. You've joined with a ss.

2. Now ss into space below hook.

3. Ch 3, work 2 stitches into the same space.

4. Ch 4, 3 stitches into the next space.

Continuing the Rounds

Round 10: ch 1; sc into same stitch; ch 3; skip next stitch, sc into the next stitch.

Now we have a nice 3 ch loop on top of our 3 dc.

For the Next Loops

(sc, ch 3, sc) into the next 4 ch loop.

Another 3 ch loop now sits on top of the loop from the last round!

To continue:

(sc into next dc, ch 3, skip next stitch, sc into next dc; (sc, ch 3, sc) into next loop) 17 times; ss into 1st sc to join. (36 loops made of 3 ch.)

Rounds 11 to 17

Round 11: ss into 1st loop; ch 1, sc into the same loop.

(Ch 4, sc into next 3 ch loop) 35 times; ch 4, ss into 1st sc to join. (36 loops.)

Round 12: ss into 1st loop; ch 1, 5 sc into the same loop.

5 sc into each of next 35 loops; ss into 1st sc to join. (36 groups of 5 stitches.)

Round 13: ch 1, sc into the same stitch.

(Ch 3, skip next 3 stitches, sc into each of the next 2 stitches) 35 times.

Ch 3, skip next 3 stitches, 1 sc into the last stitch; join with a ss into 1st sc. (36 loops separated by 2 stitches.)

Round 14: ss into 1st loop; ch 3 (counts as 1 dc); 4 dc into the same loop.

(5 dc into next loop) 35 times; join with a ss into the top of 3 ch. (36 groups of 5 stitches.)

Round 15: as we did in Round 9, ss into space below hook.

Ch 3, 1 dc into the same space.

(Ch 3, skip next group of 5 stitches, 2 dc into next space) 35 times.

Ch 3, ss into top of 3 ch to join. (36 3 ch loops separated by 2 stitches.)

Round 16: ss into next dc, ss into each of next 2 ch, sc into the 3 ch space just below your hook.

(ch 6, sc into next loop) 35 times; ch 6, ss into 1st sc to join. (36 loops.)

Round 17: ss into 1st loop; ch 1, 8 sc into the same loop.

(8 sc into next loop) 35 times; join with a ss into 1st sc.

Finally, tie off, pull the yarn gently to tighten, then weave this tail end to the back through the same stitch you joined into. Then tighten your magic ring again if necessary and weave in your starting end securely.

Weaving in the Ends

Here's how I wove in the working end:

1: Thread yarn front to back under the top 2 loops of the stitch you joined into.

2: Pull gently to tighten, then weave around the edge under the stitches of your last row.
