Materials

For great results, it is always best to use the recommended yarn. I have used approximately:

  • 100 grams of Stylecraft Special DK yarn
  • 4.50mm hook

For a:

  • Newborn baby – 3.50mm hook
  • 0-3 month & 3-6 month – 4.00mm hook

UK Instructions

With colour 1 make 6ch, join with ss to form a ring, 3ch, work 15tr into ring, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Round 2 – 3ch, 1tr into the stitch at the base of the 3ch, 2tr into each tr to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (31tr + 3ch)

Round 3 – 3ch, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last tr, 2tr into tr, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (47tr + 3ch)

Round 4 – 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of next 2tr, * rpt from * to * to last tr, 2tr into tr, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (63tr + 3ch)

Your work may look a bit wavy at this point, but it will flatten out as you go along.

Round 5 – 3ch, 1tr into the stitch at the base of the 3ch, * 1tr into each of next 11tr, 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of next 12tr * rpt from * to * to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (68tr + 3ch)

Pattern Row 1 – (WS) 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, 1dc into next tr, * MB (see abbrev) into next tr, 1dc into each of next 3tr * rpt from * to * to last 3tr, MB into next tr, 1dc into each of last 2tr. Do not ss to beginning of round from now on. Turn. (17 bobbles)

Pattern Row 2 – 3ch, 1tr into each stitch to end. Turn. (68tr + 3ch)

Rpt Pattern Rows 1 & 2 until 17 rows have been worked in all from beginning. Turn.

Starting each row with 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, work 2 rows of 1dc into each stitch, turning at the end of each row. Fasten off. (69dc)

Neck Border & Ties

Make 60ch. Fasten off. (will come back to later)

Make 61ch, ss into 2nd ch from hook, ss into each ch to end, with RS facing, join the chain tie to neck edge, work 42dc evenly along neck edge, join the 60ch made earlier to bonnet by ss into each ch to end. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn.
