Special Stitches

Bobble Stitch (bobble)

To make a bobble stitch, work four double crochets into the same stitch as below:

(Yo, insert hook into st, draw up a loop, yo, pull through first two loops on hook) and repeat 3 more times. End with 5 loops on the hook – yo, pull through all 5 loops.

Crab Stitch

Crab stitch is an sc stitch in reverse. See photos below for tutorial!

Increase Stitches (sc inc/hdc inc)

To increase stitches, you will sc or hdc 2 stitches into the same spot. This allows the shape to become wider. To do this, complete your first stitch (whether it be sc or hdc) as you typically would. Place a second stitch in the same spot, so that you are left with two stitches where previously you had one stitch.

Third Loop

To work the basket from the circular base of the basket turning up to the sides, you’ll work a round through both the back loop only (BLO) and the third loop. The third loop is created when working hdc stitches. Working through both of these loops allows the work to turn upwards for the sides, while also keeping the base sturdy and attached.

Stitch counts are included at the end of each round. Bobble rows include [total # stitches, # bobble stitches].

Round Instructions

Round 1: To begin, make a magic circle and place 8 sc stitches around. Do not join.
Continue to work in the round. [8]
*Pro tip: crochet over your magic circle end to avoid weaving later!

Round 2: [sc inc] in each stitch around. [16]

Round 3: [sc, sc inc] x 8. [24]

Round 4: [sc, sc inc, sc] x 8. [32]

Round 5: [hdc inc, hdc x 3] x 8. [40]

Round 6: Working in both the BLO and the third loop, sc x 40 around. [40]

Round 7: sc x 40 around. [40]

Round 8: sc x 2, bobble, [sc x 9, bobble] x 3, sc x 7. [40, 4 bobbles]

Rounds 9-10: sc x 40 around. (2 rounds) [40]

Round 11: sc x 7, bobble, [sc x 9, bobble] x 3, sc x 2. [40, 4 bobbles]

Rounds 12-13: sc x 40 around. (2 rounds) [40]

On the final stitch, sl st to the first st of the round and ch 1.

Round 14: Crab stitch x 40 around the top of the basket. Sl st to the first st. [40]

Cut yarn, tie off and weave in ends. Add cardboard insert, if desired.
