Getting Started with Your Jar Covers

Make a chain of stitches that fit snugly round your jar; it needs to be quite tight so it fits nicely and stays round the bottom. The chain needs to be divisible by 4. Join with a slip stitch (sl st) in the 1st chain.

For my jar, I chained 40.

Row Instructions

Row 1

- Ch 3 (counts as one double crochet), then double crochet (dc) in every chain stitch, join with a slip stitch to 3rd chain.

Row 2

- Ch 3 (counts as one double crochet), 2 dc in same stitch, ch 1. Skip 3 chain stitches, *3 dc in the next stitch, ch 1, skip 3 stitches* (basically, in every 4th stitch, you make a granny cluster). Repeat from * until you are 3 chain stitches away from the beginning of the row, join with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain.

Continuing the Pattern

Repeat Row 2 until you have reached the top of the bulgy part of the jar and the slimmer screwy part is still showing. Keep trying on the cover to determine when to stop.

Adjusting for the Slimmer Part of the Jar

For the next row, you will do the same as Row 2 but omit the chain 1's in between each granny cluster. This will tighten it up a bit for the slimmer part of the jar.

Final Row

- Ch 3 (counts as one double crochet), 3 dc in same stitch, slip stitch in middle stitch of granny cluster, *5 dc in next gap in between granny clusters, slip stitch in middle stitch of granny cluster*, repeat from * until the end, dc in the same gap as ch 3 and 3 dc to make up the 5th stitch in that cluster.
