Supplies Needed

  1. Small amount cotton yarn in green and red.
  2. Size D crochet hook.
  3. Yarn or tapestry needle.
  4. 10mm googly eyes.
  5. Small amount of glue or hot glue gun for attaching eyes.
  6. Scissors.
  7. Small amount of fiberfill to stuff the apple.

Bookworm Pattern

Row 1 – With main color chain 82, leave a long beginning tail for sewing to the apple later. If you want a shorter or longer bookmark, adjust the number of chains accordingly. The bookmark will get shorter due to the coiling of the bookworm.

Row 2 – Put 3 single crochet (sc) in each stitch for the next 20 chains. (This will cause coiling—you can add or subtract the number of stitches depending on the length you want the worm to be).

Row 3 – Slip stitch in the next chain, tie off, cut yarn, and weave in end.

Modification – If you are using thinner yarn or chaining loosely, you can slip stitch in each remaining chain to the end for a neater appearance and a thicker bookmark.

Leave a long tail for sewing to the apple or, if you are not attaching the apple, cut yarn and weave in ends to finish off. Apply glue to the googly eyes and attach them to the head of the worm.

Apple Pattern

With red color:

Row 1 – Crochet 6 sc inside a magic circle.

Row 2 – 2 sc in each stitch (12).

Row 3 – (1 sc, 1 increase) x 6 (18).

Row 4 – 6 sc in each stitch around (18).

Row 5 – (1 sc, decrease) x 6 (12); stuff with fiberfill.

Row 6 – 6 sc Dec x 6 (6); continue stuffing until firm.

With a yarn needle, sew a running stitch through the stitches and pull tight.

Insert the needle from top through bottom and pull tight. Run the yarn back and forth between top and bottom a couple of times to shape the apple. Weave ends through the apple and cut yarn close.

Leaves

With green yarn, make one or two leaves, leaving a long tail for sewing to the apple.

Row 1 – Chain 5, slip stitch in second chain from hook, sc x 2, slip stitch in the last chain. Working on the other side of the chain, slip stitch in the same stitch, sc x 2, slip stitch in the last. Join with a slip stitch.

Weave the tail to the other end of the leaf for sewing.

Assembly

(Not needed if you are not attaching the apple)

With a yarn needle, weave the tail ends of the leaves through the apple, each out of the same hole. Tie in a knot, weave back through the apple to secure, and cut yarn. Do not cut one tail end; use it to attach the bookworm.

With the tail end of the bookworm, weave through the apple, tie it to the remaining tail of the leaves, weave through the apple to hide knots, and cut tail ends close.

Note: If you would like, you could also attach the bookworm to the bottom of the apple and add a stem to the top.

Apply glue to the googly eyes and attach them to the head of the bookworm.

Viola, you are finished! Don’t be afraid to experiment and make these bookmarks unique to you!
