Materials

To create your Gecko Bookmark Toy, you will need the following materials:

  • Small amount of worsted weight yarn
  • F (4.0 mm) Crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Marker
  • Wiggle eyes (6 mm)
  • 3-inch piece of red yarn for tongue
  • Craft glue

Not important.

Gecko Instructions

Chain 55. Place a marker in the 21st chain from the start of the chain.

Tail

2 single crochet in the 2nd chain from hook, 2 single crochet in each of the next 10 chains (to create corkscrew effect); single crochet in each remaining chain (22) to the marker.

Body and Legs

Remove marker. Slip stitch in the chain where the marker was, half double crochet in the next chain, double crochet in the next 4 chains.

Leg 1

Ch 10, double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of the next 2 chains (1st toe); *ch 4, double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of the next 2 chains (2nd toe); repeat from * to ** for 3rd toe. Slip stitch in the 6th chain of the chain 10 (first chain by the first toe), slip stitch in next chain, single crochet in 4 chains. Slip stitch in the side of the double crochet at the base of the leg. Pull the slip stitch tight.

Double crochet in 7 chains.

Leg 2

Ch 10, double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of the next 2 chains (1st toe); *ch 4, double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of the next 2 chains (2nd toe); repeat from * to ** for 3rd toe. Slip stitch in the 6th chain of the chain 10 (first chain by the first toe), slip stitch in next chain, single crochet in 4 chains. Slip stitch in the side of the double crochet at the base of the leg. Pull the slip stitch tight.

Head

Double crochet in 1st, half double crochet in 1st, 2 double crochet decrease over the next 4 stitches. Half double crochet in 1st, slip stitch in last chain, chain 1. Working in the unused loop of starting chain and over the tail. Slip stitch in the same stitch as the last slip stitch. Half double crochet in next stitch, 2 double crochet decrease over the next 4 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch, double crochet in 2 stitches.

Leg 3

Ch 10, double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of the next 2 chains (1st toe); *ch 4, double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of the next 2 chains (2nd toe); repeat from * to ** for 3rd toe. Slip stitch in the 6th chain of the chain 10 (first chain by the first toe), slip stitch in next chain, single crochet in 4 chains. Slip stitch in the side of the double crochet at the base of the leg. Pull the slip stitch tight.

Double crochet in 7 chains.

Leg 4

Ch 10, double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of the next 2 chains (1st toe); *ch 4, double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, slip stitch in each of the next 2 chains (2nd toe); repeat from * to ** for 3rd toe. Slip stitch in the 6th chain of the chain 10 (first chain by the first toe), slip stitch in next chain, single crochet in 4 chains. Slip stitch in the side of the double crochet at the base of the leg. Pull the slip stitch tight.

Double crochet in 3 chains, half double crochet in next chain, slip stitch in last chain.

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Finishing

With the remaining tail, weave through the back of the stitches to the 3rd stitch from the front legs. Sew across to the corresponding stitch on the other side of the neck. Weave in the end.

With a yarn needle, pull the red yarn through the stitch under the point of the Gecko’s head. Glue in place. I used a plastic clothespin to hold the red yarn together close to the head, just the yarn not the head. Don’t use a wooden clothespin, ask me how I know.

Glue on eyes.
