3 х 3 – 3 sts out of 3: insert right-hand knitting needle in the next 3 sts, knit them together as knit st, don't slip sts from the left-hand needle, make 3 sts together as knit st = 3 new sts from 3 already knitted.

The quantity of sts is multipled 4 sts + 3 sts for the symmetry + 2 selvedge sts.

1st row - wrong side: purl;

2nd row - right side: * 3 x 3, 1 knit st*; repeat from * to * to last 4 sts, knit 3 x 3, slip st;

3rd row: purl;

4th row: slip st, 2 knit sts, * knit 3 x 3, 1 knit st*; repeat from * to * to last 2 sts, 1 knit st, slip st.
