How to Create Your Own Amigurumi Character

You'll Need:

Yarn for amigurumi in the colors red, blue, white, black, yellow, and beige;

Yarn for embroidery in white;

Fiber fill for amigurumi;

Safety eyes;

Crochet hook (2.0mm or 2.5mm);

Sewing needle;

Water-based fabric paint in blue and red;

Brush;

Container to dilute the paint.

Instructions

Let’s begin with the head:

Make one piece.

Begin with beige color:

Hair

Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing the hair to the head.

Now let’s make the ponytails.

Make two pieces:

1. 21ch (21).
2. Beginning on the second ch from the hook, make [1sc, 1inc]x4, 12sc (24).

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing the ponytails to the head.

Make two more pieces:

1. 26ch (26).
2. Beginning on the second ch from the hook, make [1sc, 1inc]x6, 13sc (31).

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing the ponytails to the head.

Arms

Make two pieces.

Begin with beige color:

1. 6sc on MR (6)
2. Rows 2 and 3: 6sc (6)

Change to white color.

3. Rows 4 to 7: 6sc (6). Total of 4 rows.

Change to red color.

4. Rows 8 and 9: 6sc (6)

Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing the arms to the body.

There is no need to stuff.

Legs

Left Leg (Blue)

Note: It is important to make the blue leg first so the look on the front part of the amigurumi is perfect.

Begin with black color:

2. Rows 2 and 3: 6sc (6)

Change to beige color.

Finish stuffing.

Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing the body to the head.

Assembling

First of all, we need to paint the ponytails’ edges. It is important to do this step BEFORE sewing the ponytails to the head. Paint two pieces in blue (one long and one short) and two pieces in red (one long and one short).

Dilute the fabric paint in water and begin to paint carefully from the bottom up. Take a wet cotton swab and pass on the transition area to smooth the paint into the non-painted area (to make a gradual transition of colors). Let it dry hanging.

Sew the hair into the head, without the ponytails. Be sure to place it aligned with the eyes' position.

Sew the ponytails to the head (red ones on the right and blue ones on the left). Be careful to align them according to the eyes' position. Wrap red/blue yarn on the base of the respective ponytails, fasten off, and hide the yarn.

Sew the head to the body. Ensure that the right leg is the red one and the left leg is the blue one, matching the hair colors. Keep the head aligned to the legs.

Sew the arms to the body. Make sure they are aligned with the head and legs.

Embroider the shoelaces with white embroidery yarn.

If you wish, apply some blue and red makeup over the eyes.
