How to Crochet a Little Crocodile

Finished Size: about 3.5" tall sitting

Materials Needed:

  • Medium weight yarn in 2 shades of green (sample made in Loops and Threads Impeccable in Deep Forest, and Forest)
  • G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
  • 2 - 6 mm safety eyes
  • Polyfil fiberfill
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • White embroidery floss and needle

Instructions:

The body and head are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sewn on. All of the pieces, except the back bumps and the belly, are made beginning with a magic ring (mr).

Body

Make 1 with dark green, beginning with magic ring

  1. Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
  2. Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
  3. Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
  4. Rounds 4-8: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
  5. Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
  6. Round 9: sc2tog around (9 sc)
  7. Round 10: 2 sc in each st (18 sc)
  8. Round 11: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
  9. Rounds 12-15: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
  10. Round 16: [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
  11. Insert safety eyes between rounds 13 and 14 about 3 stitches apart
  12. Round 17: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
  13. Round 18: sc2tog around (6 sc)
  14. Finish off, weave in ends

Mouth

Make 1 with dark green yarn, beginning with magic ring

  1. Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
  2. Round 2: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (8 sc)
  3. Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat (10 sc)
  4. Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat (12 sc)
  5. Round 5: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
  6. Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
  7. Add stuffing and sew the mouth to the head just below the eyes
  8. Use white embroidery floss to stitch a zigzag line around the mouth

Belly

Make 1 with light green yarn, beginning with chain

  1. ch 3
  2. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and next ch (2 sc)
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in each st (4 sc)
  4. Rows 3-4: ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st (4 sc)
  5. Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc2tog twice (2 sc)
  6. Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing
  7. Stitch the belly patch to the front of the body

Legs

Make 4 with dark green yarn, beginning with magic ring

  1. Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 8 sc (8 sc)
  2. Rounds 2-4: 1 sc in each st (8 sc)
  3. Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing
  4. Sew 2 of the legs/arms to the side of the body just below the head, sew the other 2 to the bottom side of the body in a sitting position

Tail

Make 1 with dark green yarn, beginning with magic ring

  1. Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 4 sc (4 sc)
  2. Round 2: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat (6 sc)
  3. Round 3: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
  4. Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (9 sc)
  5. Round 5: 1 sc in each st (9 sc)
  6. Round 6: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (12 sc)
  7. Round 7: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
  8. Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing
  9. Add a small amount of stuffing to the tail and sew to the bottom of the back side of the body

Back Bumps

Make 1 with light green yarn, beginning with a ch (this is actually just a chain with little picot type bumps along it)

  1. ch 2, sl st in 1st ch that you made
  2. [ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook] 6 times (7 picot bumps)
  3. Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing
  4. Bend in a v shape and place the center bump (at the point of the v) at the tip of the tail and the 3 bumps on either side of the center going up the tail and back of the crocodile
  5. Stitch in place
