Skill Level / Language: Beginner/Intermediate.

Gauge

Not critical as you will be able to “scrunch” the ends of the hammock onto the dowel rod like a curtain. You can stop at any of the middle rows (8 - 19) to make it shorter or add rows after row 18 to make it longer. If you really want it to be as close as possible, see next item.

4hdc = approx. 1 inch / 3 rows = approx. 1 inch - Swatch = approx 4 x 4:

Begin

Ch 17

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc next 15, ch 1. (16st)

Row 2 - 12: Turn, 16 hdc, ch 1. (16st)

Sizing

The hammock is approximately 12 inches (wide / depth of cabinet) x 18 inches long. To make the hammock longer, you will add additional rows after row 18. The hammock is designed for standard 12-inch deep upper cabinets. To make it wider, the beginning ch is multiples of 6 + 1. If making wider, you will need to adjust the length of the dowel used.

Pattern Instructions

* Beginning chains do not count as st unless otherwise stated.

Fruit Basket

Begin: Leave a 16-inch tail to make a pocket at the end if you are using dowels, ch 49.

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 47, ch 1. (48st)

Row 2 - 7: Turn, hdc 48, ch 1. (48st)

Note: Turning ch counts as a stitch for rows 8 - 19.

Note: Four of the ch 9 at the end of row 8 and proceeding rows count as a TR; the remaining 5 creates the open spaces of the hammock.

Row 8: Turn, hdc 48, ch 9. (48st)

Note: If you want the openings of your hammock to be smaller, you can do a dc or hdc stitch in place of the tr stitch in rows 9 - 19 and add or subtract rows as desired to reach the length of your choice.

Note: If you switch the tr stitch for a smaller stitch, you will need to alter your turning chain to ch 8 for dc or ch 6 or 7 for a hdc stitch.

Row 9 - 18: Turn, sk 5, tr, *ch 5, sk 5, tr*, repeat *to* 6 more times, ch 9. (8 open spaces)

Note: If you want your hammock to be longer, you will need to add as many rows as desired now before proceeding.

Row 19: Turn, sk 5, tr, *ch 5, sk 5, tr*, repeat *to* 6 more times, ch 1. (8 open spaces)

Row 20: Turn, hdc 48; recommendation is to hdc 5 in the open spaces and 1 hdc in the tops of the tr to space them out evenly, ch 1. (48st)

Row 21 - 27: Turn, hdc 48, ch 1. (48st); leave a 16-inch tail after the last stitch of row 27.

Finish

Fold Row 27 over to Row 24 and with a needle, use the tail to sew the end of row 27 to the top of row 24. This will create a pocket opening to slide the dowel into like a “curtain.” Slide dowel into the opening. Repeat this on the opposite end of the hammock with rows 1 and 4. Weave in ends.

Screw your cup hooks into the bottom of your kitchen cabinets at your desired width and set the ends of your dowels into the hooks.

Tip: You can either set the ends of dowels in the hooks directly or slip the hook through a couple of the stitches and under the dowel to help keep it from slipping off.

Alternatives

If you do not want to use dowels, you can skip the finish section where you make pockets for the dowels and use thumbtacks in the four corners of your hammock.

You could also use command hooks to hold your hammock if you do not want to use a dowel.

This hammock is also great for holding bread, chips, hand towels, napkins, and more! You can also use this hammock in bathrooms, closets, laundry rooms, garages, and other spaces both indoors and outdoors! Have fun!

Congrats! You have just completed your hammock!
