Materials

  • Yarn: cotton yarn in natural, peach or apple color, brown, green
  • Hook: H
  • Miscellaneous: yarn needle

Directions

With H hook and brown cotton yarn (or desired color for top “loop/stem”), chain 12. Sl st into last chain to form a loop.

Change to cream yarn. Chain 13.

This step creates the center post. Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in next 10. Sl st in last chain before loop.

Ch 1, (work in back loops of previous chain) sc, hdc, dc, dc, dc2 in one st, dc, dc2 in one st, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st in last st. First rib complete.

Ch 1. Do not turn. Pivot piece to work along center post. Work in FLO. Sc 12, sl st in base of beginning top/stem loop. Note: Place a marker in one of the back loops (remaining loops) from previous step. This is where the final rib will be worked to complete the circle.

Ch 1, turn, (work in back loops) sc, hdc, dc, dc, dc2 in one st, dc, dc2 in one st, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. Second rib complete.

Ch 1, turn to work in remaining loops of previous rib. Sc 12, sl st in base of beginning top/stem loop. Ch 1, turn, (work in back loops) sc, hdc, dc, dc, dc2 in one st, dc, dc2 in one st, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. * Repeat until there are 12 ribs. Last “rib” is crocheted into the back loops of the beginning rib and previous rib which will seam the piece together.

Change to contrasting color for edging (peach or apple). Turn to work along top of rib. Ch 1, sl st in next st repeat to end of rib. Ch 1, pivot piece to work across next rib. Repeat for each rib. When finished, cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread tail into yarn needle. Weave through bottom circle and pull snug. Push needle up through center and out by “stem” loop.

Thread through one top stitch and pull slightly to form tawashi into a ball shape. Tie off and weave in ends.

Leaf

With green yarn, ch 12. Dc in fourth ch from hook, dc in next 4 ch, hdc, hdc, sc, sl st in last ch, ch 1. Working in unused loops of beginning ch and working over beginning tail (to secure end), sl st, sc, hdc, hdc, dc in next 5 sts, ch 2, sl st into base of leaf. Continue to “finish leaf”. For a smaller leaf Hook size G or H With green yarn, ch 8 Dc in fourth ch from hook, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. Turn, working in unused loops (cover tail along the way), sl st, sc, hdc, dc, dc, sl st into stem base.

Finish leaf: Sl st around stem to secure leaf in place, weave in ends.
