Techniques
Magic Circle
Essential to the start of most amigurumi.
Invisible Decrease
Good for preventing gaps and giving a more uniform look to your sc’s.
Working in Front Loops
For my patterns, I always work sc’s in the front loops of the stitch, unless otherwise specified. By working in only the front loops, the sc’s will stack up straighter than if you worked them in both loops.
Stitch Markers
I use a stitch marker (bobby pin) for keeping track of the beginning of my rounds; I place it in the first stitch of the round.
Staggered Rounds
Staggered rounds offset the patterns’ increases or decreases so you don’t get that pinwheel look, and it is more of a circle instead of a hexagon. For example, [4 sc, inc] x6 is an even increase round that can be a staggered round, so it would become, 2 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] x5, 2 sc; the even sc’s are split at the beginning of the round.
Close
Closing a piece is threading your yarn needle with the yarn end and putting it through each of the front loops of the last round’s sc’s, usually 6, and pulling tight. It should look like a mini magic circle, then put the needle through the center of it and out through the piece. Tie your knot and stuff ends back into the piece.
Whip Stitch
Usually means the finished piece is folded flat with the last sc or yarn end at the edge of the piece. Thread a yarn needle with the yarn end, and again with only the front loops, ‘zigzag,’ or whip stitch the opening closed.
Pattern
Head
This fox has a fairly big head that is worked from the nose back. It starts out with your 2nd accent color and changes to the main color at rnd 7. The color change counts as the first stitch of the round and is followed by a sl st. The safety nose is placed right above the magic circle, and the washer of the safety nose gives the fox something of a snout.
Start with 2nd accent color
- RND 1: 4 sc in MC (4 sts)
- RND 2: 4 inc (8 sts)
- RND 3: sc rnd (8 sts)
- RND 4: 8 inc (16 sts)
- RND 5: sc rnd (16 sts)
- Place nose between rnds 1 and 2
- RND 6: [sc, inc] x8 (24 sts)
- RND 7: CC to main color, sl st, 22 sc (24 sts)
- RND 8: sc, inc [2 sc, inc] x7, sc (32 sts)
- RND 9-10: Two sc rnds (32 sts)
- RND 11: [3 sc, inc] x8 (40 sts)
- RND 12-13: Two sc rnds (40 sts)
- RND 14: [3 sc, dec] x8 (32 sts)
- RND 15: sc, dec, [2 sc, dec], sc x7 (24 sts)
- RND 16: sc rnd (24 sts)
Place eyes between RNDs 9 and 10, about 12 sts between the eyes.
- RND 17: [sc, dec] x8 (16 sts)
- RND 18: 8 dec (8 sts)
Fully stuff the head and close.
Ears x 2
Lovely little triangles, start with accent color and switch to main color at rnd 5. Color change counts as the first stitch of the round and is followed by a sl st.
Starting with accent color
- RND 1: 3 sc in MC (3 sts)
- RND 2: 3 inc (6 sts)
- RND 3: [sc, inc] x3 (9 sts)
- RND 4: sc rnd (9 sts)
- RND 5: CC to main color, sl st, inc, [2 sc, inc] x2 (12 sts)
- RND 6: sc rnd (12 sts)
- RND 7: [3 sc, inc] x3 (15 sts)
- RND 8: 2 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] x2, sc (18 sts)
- RND 9: sc rnd (18 sts)
Whip stitch ear closed and attach to the head along rnd 13 with two sts between them.
Body
The body is done in only the main color. Pay attention to the shape of the body; the consecutive decreases create a curve for the back, so don’t want to put the body on backwards. When attaching the head and body, you have a lot of freedom on what sort of expression your fox will have. Play around with the head position until you find something you like, and then attach.
With main color
- RND 1: 6 sc in MC (6 sts)
- RND 2: 6 inc (12 sts)
- RND 3: [sc, inc] x6 (18 sts)
- RND 4: sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x4, sc (24 sts)
- RND 5-7: Three sc rnds (24 sts)
- RND 8: Dec, 20 sc, dec (22 sts)
- RND 9: sc rnd (22 sts)
- RND 10: Dec, 18 sc, dec (20 sts)
- RND 11: sc rnd (20 sts)
- RND 12: Dec, 16 sc, dec (18 sts)
- RND 13: sc rnd (18 sts)
- RND 14: Dec, 14 sc, dec (16 sts)
- RND 15: Dec, 12 sc, dec (14 sts)
Fully stuff and align the head on the body to be slightly off-center for a head tilt. Stuff the neck as you attach it to the body.
Front Legs x2
The legs are fairly flat pieces with only the paws being stuffed with just the yarn ends; this makes it a little easier to sew onto the body. They are in two colors, main and accent. Color change is at rnd 5.
Starting with accent color
- RND 1: 4 sc in MC (4 sts)
- RND 2: 4 inc (8 sts)
- RND 3-4: Two sc rnds (8 sts)
- RND 5: CC to main color, sl st, 6 sc (8 sts)
- RND 6-7: Two sc rnds (8 sts)
- RND 8: [3 sc, inc] x2 (10 sts)
- RND 9: sc rnd (10 sts)
- RND 10: [4 sc, inc] (12 sts)
Using a dowel, push down the three yarn ends into the paws. Whip stitch the opening closed and attach legs to the body at an angle starting between rnd 13 and 14 and down across four rnds. About four sts between the legs while looking from the front.
Back Legs x2
Also in two colors, main and accent, but the color change is at rnd 4.
Starting with accent color
- RND 1: 4 sc in MC (4 sts)
- RND 2: 4 inc (8 sts)
- RND 3: sc rnd (8 sts)
- RND 4: CC to main color, sl st, 6 sc (8 sts)
- RND 5: sc rnd (8 sts)
- RND 6: [3 sc, inc] x2 (10 sts)
- RND 7: sc rnd (10 sts)
- RND 8: [4 sc, inc] x2 (12 sts)
- RND 9: [5 sc, inc] x2 (14 sts)
Using a dowel, push down the three yarn ends into the paws. Whip stitch the openings closed and attach legs to the body starting between rnd 8 and 9 and down across four rnds. About eight sts between the legs while looking from the front.
Tail
Tail starts with the 2nd accent color and then changes back to the main at rnd 7.
Starting with the 2nd accent color
- RND 1: 3 sc in MC (3 sts)
- RND 2: 3 inc (6 sts)
- RND 3: [sc, inc] x3 (9 sts)
- RND 4: sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x2, sc (12 sts)
- RND 5: [3 sc, inc] x3 (15 sts)
- RND 6: 2 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] x3, 2 sc (18 sts)
- RND 7: CC to main color, sl st, 3 sc, inc, [5 sc, inc] x2 (21 sts)
- RND 8-9: Two sc rnds (21 sts)
- RND 10: [5 sc, dec] x3 (18 sts)
- RND 11: sc rnd (18 sts)
- RND 12: 2 sc, dec, [4 sc, dec] x2, 2 sc (15 sts)
- RND 13: sc rnd (15 sts)
Begin stuffing the tail.
- RND 14: [3 sc, dec] x3 (12 sts)
- RND 15: sc, dec, [2 sc, dec] x2, sc (9 sts)
- RND 16: sc rnd (9 sts)
Fully stuff the tail, use a dowel if needed, and sew to the body starting between rnds 3 and 4.
Your fox is complete!
