I used a G hook for newborn size. F for Preemie, H, I, and J for larger sizes.

Hat Construction

Round 1: Chain 4. 10 double crochet in 4th chain from hook. Slip stitch to beginning.

Round 2: Chain 3. 2 double crochet in each stitch around. Slip stitch to beginning.

Round 3: Chain 3. 2 double crochet in first stitch, 1 double crochet in next stitch. *2 double crochet in next stitch, 1 double crochet in next stitch* continue *..* around to beginning. Slip stitch to beginning.

Round 4: Chain 3. 2 double crochet in first stitch, 1 double crochet in next 2 stitches. *2 double crochet in next stitch, 1 double crochet in next 2 stitches* continue *..* around to beginning. Slip stitch to beginning.

Round 5: Chain 2. Half double crochet in each stitch around back loops only. Slip stitch to beginning.

Rounds 6 thru 10: Chain 3. Double crochet in each stitch around. Slip stitch to beginning.

Change color to brown.

Rounds 11 and 12: Chain 3. Double crochet in each stitch around. Slip stitch to beginning.

Change color back to green.

Round 13: Chain 3. Double crochet in each stitch around. Slip stitch to beginning.

Round 14: Chain 2. 2 half double crochet in first stitch, 1 half double crochet in next stitch. *2 half double crochet in next stitch, 1 half double crochet in next stitch* continue *..* around to beginning. Slip stitch to beginning.

Round 15: Chain 3. 2 double crochet in first stitch, 1 double crochet in next 2 stitches. *2 double crochet in next stitch, 1 double crochet in next 2 stitches* continue *..* around to beginning. Slip stitch to beginning.

Round 16: Chain 3. 2 double crochet in first stitch, 1 double crochet in next 3 stitches. *2 double crochet in next stitch, 1 double crochet in next 3 stitches* continue *..* around to beginning. Slip stitch to beginning. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Buckle Construction

Buckle - yellow/gold yarn

Chain 18. 1 half double crochet in 3rd chain from hook. 1 half double crochet in next chain. 4 half double crochet in next chain, 1 half double crochet in next 3 chains.

4 half double crochet in next chain. 1 half double crochet in next 3 chains. 4 half double crochet in next chain. 1 half double crochet in next 3 chains.

4 half double crochet in next chain. 1 half double crochet in next 2 chains. Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Place ends together to form buckle and sew together. Sew buckle onto hat at the brown rounds.

Customization Ideas

You could make this all black for a top hat. Red and white striped for Dr. Seuss. Pastel colors for Easter.

Black and orange for Halloween. Brown for Thanksgiving.
