Complete Guide to Crocheting a Baby Bear Hat with Ears in Multiple Sizes

You’ll Need:

50-70 Yards of Super Bulky Weight Yarn: Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn in the color Dove. (3.5oz/72yds per skein);

Crochet hook 10 mm;

Tapestry needle.

Size:

  • 0-3 months: 12-14″
  • 3-6 months: 14-16″
  • 6-12 months: 16-18″

Stitches Control:

4″ square = 5 rows of 7 hdc’s

Notes:

The hat is worked starting at the top using a magic circle.

The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

To join at the end of each round, slip stitch into the chain or use the no-cut join method for a seamless look.

Instructions:

Baby Bear Ear:

Make 2

Make a magic circle.

Row 1: work 3 sc’s in the magic circle, don’t join, turn (3 sts)

Row 2: ch 1, 2 sc’s in the first st, 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc’s in the last st, don’t join, turn (5 sts)

Row 3: ch 1, [2 sc’s in the next st, 1 sc in the next] work 2 times, 2 sc’s in the last st (8 sts)

Break yarn leaving a long enough tail to sew the ears onto the hat. (15”)

The ear is a half moon shape. Weave the tail of your yarn through the bottom of the ear. When you pull the yarn tight the ear will gather slightly. Sew onto the top of the hat.

Bear Crochet Hat:

Size 0-3 Months:

Make Magic Circle

Round 1: work 8 hdc in the magic circle, join (8 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, join (16 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, [1 hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 hdc’s in next st] work 5 times, 1 hdc in the last st, join (21 sts)

Rounds 4-7: ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around, join (21 sts)

Break yarn and sew in ends.

Size 3-6 Months:

Make Magic Circle

Round 1: work 8 hdc in the magic circle, join (8 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, join (16 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, [1 hdc in the next st, 2 hdc’s in next st] repeat around, join (24 sts)

Rounds 4-8: ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around, join (24 sts)

Break yarn and sew in ends.

Size 6-12 Months:

Make Magic Circle

Round 1: work 8 hdc in the magic circle, join (8 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, join (16 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, [1 hdc in the next st, 2 hdc’s in next st] repeat around, join (24 sts)

Round 4: ch 1, [1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 hdc in the next st] repeat around, join (28 sts)

Rounds 5-9: ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around, join (28 sts)

Break yarn and sew in ends.
