NEW TO CROCHET....REQUESTING HELP

I am a relatively  new crocheter.  I've made blankets and scarves, you know, the easy stuff.  Anyway, I came across a pattern on YouTube for a baby blanket that I love, but I'm having problems at the beginning of all places.  They say to use a 4 weight yarn with a 4mm hook and 150 chains, which is supposed to come to measure about 36 inches.  When I do it, it comes to about 46".  I tried a 3.5mm hook and it only takes it down to about 44.  This is the site:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2lovq52GxQ&t=391s...

Can anyone help?  I'm trying to make it for my husband's niece who is expecting in two weeks (or less).  I know I could do another pattern, but I'd really like to find out what I'm doing wrong instead of just giving up.  Thanks

Hi, In the video she is using a DK weight yarn with the recommended hook size of 4, not  a #4 worsted weight yarn. That is probably why your blanket is measuring bigger. I’m sure making it with the worsted weight yarn would make a beautiful blanket as well though. If you want it to be smaller, she says the pattern is a multiple of 6 + 4, so you can reduce the count in multiples of 6 to get the size you want. I hope this helps… good luck and happy crocheting! I honestly don't worry so much about guage unless I'm making separate pieces that need to fit together. If you like the yarn you've already purchased, just go with it! No one but you will notice, and a project made with love is always well received and appreciated.

Thanks to everyone!  I've got a lot to learn and I'm hoping that your group will accept a novice like me!!

If you are measuring the starting chain you really cannot tell. Usually, you make a sample square. That way you can see how loose or tight you are crocheting and adjust from there. And just a thought, I usually make my baby afghans 42" long that way it can be used for a toddler too.

Good luck,

Donna
