Creative Crochet Techniques: Transforming Heart Motifs into Circles and Squares

Transforming a crochet heart motif into a circle and then into a square motif can add a unique and creative touch to your crochet projects. To begin, crochet a heart motif using your preferred yarn and hook size. Once the heart is complete, continue working in the round to create a circle motif by adding stitches evenly around the edges of the heart.

This will help to smooth out the edges and transition the shape from a heart to a circle seamlessly. This process allows you to experiment with different shapes and designs, giving you the freedom to create truly unique and eye-catching crochet motifs.

Materials

  • Worsted Weight Yarn in a lighter color and a darker color
  • (I used RedHeart Supersaver yarn)
  • Size G hook

Finish Size: 5”h x 5”w

Special Stitches

Extended Double Crochet (edc)

Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 1 loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over, draw through last 2 loops.

Treble Crochet (tc)

Yarn over twice, insert hook in stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over draw through 2 loops, yarn over draw through last two loops.

Note: Rnd 1 of both circle and square are worked going into the Back Backloop only. This leaves both the regular loops free to create a ridge.

Back Backloop (bb)

Heart Motif

With darker color yarn, chain 7, 4 treble crochets (tc) in 4th chain from hook, 1 double crochet (dc) in next chain, 1 half double crochet (hdc) in next chain, 1 single crochet (sc) in next chain, chain 2, turn so you are working on the other side of starting chain working into the free loop, 1 sc in same stitch as other sc, 1 hdc in next loop, 1 dc in next loop, 4 tc in next loop, chain 3 and slip stitch in same loop. Color change to lighter color yarn by chaining one, make sure before you make a knot to pull the slip stitch loop (this will be the darker colored loop) taut so it is less noticeable. Finish off darker colored yarn.

Note: The white loop will be the chain you sc into in Rnd 1 of Circle.

Rnd 1: Chain 2, 1 sc in each of the bb of the next 4 tc, 1 hdc in each of the bb of the next dc and hdc, 1 sc in the bb of the next sc, chain 1, 1 sc in the bb of next sc, 1 hdc in each of the bb of the next hdc and dc, 1 sc in each of the bb of the next 4 tc, chain 2 and join with a sc to first chain. (14 sts total + 2 chain 2 spaces and 1 chain 1 space)

Rnd 2: Chain 3, 3 edc in chain 2 space, 2 dc in each of the next 7 stitches, 1 edc in chain 1 space, 1 dc in each of the next 7 stitches, 3 edc in chain 2 space, join with slip stitch to top of chain 3. (36 sts total sc + chain 3 counts as an edc)

Finish off.

Rnd 1: Join darker color yarn with a slip stitch to the bb of the 2nd dc from the 3rd edc from top. Chain 5, 1 dc in same bb, [1 hdc in each of the bb of the next 2 stitches, 1 sc in each of the bb of next 4 stitches, 1 hdc in each of the bb of the next 2 stitches, (1 dc, chain 2, 1 dc) all in bb of next stitch] Do this 3 times, 1 hdc in each of the bb of the next 2 stitches, 1 sc in each of the bb of next 4 stitches, 1 hdc in each of the bb of the next 2 stitches, join with slip stitch to 3rd chain of chain 5.
