Materials: Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn: Purple- 1 oz, 50 yd (30 g, 46 m) Multicolor – ½ oz, 25 yd (15 g, 23 m) Small amounts Blue, Ecru and Yellow (Sugar ‘n Cream – Hot Purple, Spring Swirl, Robin Egg Blue, Ecru, Country Yellow)

Crochet Hook: Size H-8 and I-9 (5.00 mm and 5.50 mm)

Gauge: 3 sc = 1″, 3 sc rows = 1″.

JOINING WITH SC

When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

Special Stitches

Single Crochet Decrease: (sc dec): Draw up a lp in each of next 2 sts, yo and draw through 3 lps on hook.

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): Yo, insert hook in front of work from right to left around next dc of previous row, yo, pull up a lp, (yo, pull through 2 lps) twice.

BIRDHOUSE

Rnd 1: (Right Side) With Ecru and larger hook, ch 2, 10 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with sl st to first sc. (10 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around; join. (20 sc) Finish off Ecru and weave in ends.

Rnd 3: With right side facing, join Multicolor with sc to front loop of any sc on Rnd 2, working in front loops only, sc in next sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc) around; join. (26 sc) Finish off and weave in ends.

Rnd 4: With right side facing, join Purple with sl st to any back loop on Rnd 2, ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), working in back loops only, dc in same sc, dc in next 2 sc, 2 dc in next sc, ch 1, (2 dc in next sc, dc in next 2 sc, 2 dc in next sc, ch 1) around; join with sl st around post of first dc.. (30 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, working in both loops, FPdc in next 5 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp, * FPdc in next 6 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around; join around post of first dc. (40 dc)

Rnd 6: Ch 3, FPdc in next 6 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp, * FPdc in next 8 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ending with FPdc in next dc; join around post of first dc. (50 dc)

Rnd 7: Ch 3, FPdc in next 7 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp, * FPdc in next 10 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ending with FPdc in next 2 dc; join around post of first dc. (60 dc)

Rnd 8: Ch 3, FPdc in next 8 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp, * FPdc in next 12 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ending with FPdc in next 3 dc; join around post of first dc. (70 dc)

Rnd 9: Ch 3, FPdc in next 9 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp, * FPdc in next 14 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ending with FPdc in next 4 dc; join with sl st to first dc. (80 dc) Finish off and weave in ends.

Rnd 10: With right side facing, join Multicolor with sc to any ch-1 sp, 2 sc in same sp, sc in next 16 dc, (2 sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next 16 dc, join with sl st to first sc. (90 sc)

Rnd 11: Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch; working in Rnd 10, sc in next 36 sc, ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch; working in Rnd 10, sc in next 18 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 16 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 18 sc; join with sl st to beg ch-1. Finish off and weave in ends.

Rnd 12: With right side facing, join Multicolor with sc to first sc on Rnd 10, (ch 1, sc, ch 2, dc) in same sc, [skip next sc, (sc, ch 2, dc) in next sc] 9 times, [(sc, ch 2, dc) in next sc, skip next sc] 9 times, (sc, ch 2, dc) in next sc, skip next sc, sc in bottom lp of last sc. Finish off and weave in ends.

BIRD

Rnd 1: (Right Side) With Blue and smaller hook, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with sl st to first sc. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around; join. (16 sc) Work continues in rows.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc. (4 sc) Leave remaining sts unworked.

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. (5 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, (sc in next sc) across. (6 sc)

Row 6: Rep Row 4. (7 sc)

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, (sc dec) twice, sc in next 3 sc. (5 sc)

Row 8: Ch 3, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, working in Row 7, sc in next 3 sc, sc dec. (6 sc)

Row 9: Evenly sl st around Bird to tip of tail. Finish off leaving long end.

Beak

Row 1: With right side of Bird facing, using photo as guide, join Yellow with sl st to sl st on Head, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook. Finish off and weave in ends on wrong side of Bird.

– With right sides facing, position Bird, using long end sew to front of Birdhouse.
