Materials Needed

The following materials are needed to create the Crochet Sizzling Sun Plant Poke/Magnet:

  • Small amount worsted weight yarn (I used A=orange, B=yellow)
  • Crochet hook size F (3.75mm)
  • Small amount polyester stuffing for plant poke only
  • Bamboo skewer (for plant poke)
  • Magnetic strip (for magnet)

Notes

Always start single crochet rounds with a chain 1. This does NOT count as the first stitch.

To crochet two stitches together, leaving the last loop of each stitch on the hook, work the specified stitch in the next 2 (or 3) stitches. Yarn over, pull through ALL loops.

Instructions

Start Your Project

To start: (For plant poke, make 2 the same; for magnet, make 1)

With A, chain 4, join with slip stitch to form a ring.

Rounds

Rnd 1: 10 single crochet in ring.

Rnd 2: 2 single crochet in each stitch around. (20)

Rnd 3: (single crochet in 1 stitch, 2 single crochet in next) around. (30)

Rnd 4: Single crochet around. Fasten off, weave in ends.

For Plant Poke Only

If making a magnet, disregard the following instructions, as it is for the plant poke only:

Do NOT fasten off at the end of the second round. Hold both pieces wrong sides together, chain 1, single crochet through both thicknesses around, stuffing fairly firmly before closing. Join, fasten off. (30)

Creating the Rays

For rays: Hold the sun right side facing. Join yellow in any stitch.

*Chain 9, single crochet in 2nd chain from hook. Single crochet next 2 chains together, half double crochet next 2 stitches together, 3 double crochet in next chain, double crochet in next, triple crochet in last. Skip 3 stitches, slip stitch in next two. Continue from * around. Join to joining slip stitch. Fasten off. (6 rays)

With the right side facing, and working in front of the first round of rays, join yellow in the centre skipped stitch in front of any ray.

*Chain 9, single crochet in 2nd chain from hook. 3 single crochet in the next stitch, half double crochet in the next. Double crochet next 3 stitches together, double crochet in the next, triple crochet in the last. Skip 3 stitches, slip stitch in 2. Repeat from * around. (6 rays)

Final Assembly

For the plant poke, insert the bamboo skewer in the bottom of the sun, if desired, and glue in place. For extra decoration, make a loopy bow with a few lengths of orange and yellow narrow ribbon, tying it around the skewer just below the sun, leaving tails.

For the magnet, glue the magnetic strip on the back.

The rays will tend to curl up a bit.
