Essential Crochet Instructions for Creating a Beautiful Child's Skirt with Ruffles and Ties

You’ll Need:

9 (11) oz of Caron Natural yarn in Sunset color (#0010, color A) (75% Microdenier acrylic, 25% Merino wool; 3 oz/85 g, 185 yds/170 m ball);

1.5 (2) oz of the same yarn, but in Deep Taupe color (#0015, color B);

Crochet hook 5.5 mm and 4.25 mm;

Safety pin;

Split ring stitch marker;

Yarn needle.

Size:

18 months (36 months).

Stitches Control:

12 sts x 12 rows = 4” x 4”.

Special Stitches:

Shell: (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in indicated stitch or space.

Instructions:

Skirt

Beginning at waistband with larger hook and A, chain 72 (80); taking care to not twist ch, join with slip st in first ch to form a ring;

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around—72 (80) sc. Place a marker in the first sc to indicate the beginning of the round. Move the marker up as each round is completed.

Round 2: Sc in each sc around; do not join.

Repeat Round 2 until the piece measures 1 1/2"/4 cm from the beginning.

Increase Round: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—108 (120) sc.

Repeat Round 2 until the piece measures 8 1/2 (10 1/2)"/21.5 (26.5) cm from the beginning. Do not fasten off.

Lower Ruffle:

Round 1: *3 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc—270 (300) sc.

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in the same st as join (shell made), *skip next 4 sc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next sc (shell made); repeat from * to last 4 sc, skip last 4 sc; join with slip st in top of beginning ch—54 (60) shells.

Rounds 3 and 4: Slip st to first ch-3 space, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in the same ch-3 space, shell in each remaining ch-3 space around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch.

Fasten off.

Edging Round: Join B with slip st in first ch-3 space, ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, sc) in the same ch-3 space, (sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, sc) in each remaining ch-3 space around; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

Upper Ruffle:

With larger hook and A, chain 112 (116); taking care to not twist ch, join with slip st in first ch to form a ring;

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around; join with slip st in first sc—112 (116) sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in the same sc as join, 2 sc in next sc, *3 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc—280 (290) sc.

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in the same st as join (shell made), *skip next 4 sc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next sc (shell made); repeat from * to last 4 sc, skip last 4 sc; join with slip st in top of beginning ch—56 (58) shells.

Rounds 4 and 5: Slip st to first ch-3 space, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in the same ch-3 space, shell in each remaining ch-3 space around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch. Fasten off.

Edging Round: Join B with slip st in first ch-3 space, ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, sc) in the same ch-3 space, (sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, sc) in each remaining ch-3 space around; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

Tie:

With smaller hook and B, make a chain about 55 (57)"/139.5 (145) cm long.

Row 1: Slip st in second ch from hook and in each remaining ch across. Fasten off.

Assembly:

Sew the upper ruffle to the skirt, about 2"/5 cm above the lower ruffle, easing in any fullness. Fold the waistband in half and sew down on the wrong side. Attach one end of the tie to the safety pin. Beginning at the center front of the skirt, push the safety pin in and out between groups of 2 sc and draw the tie through the waistband. Using a yarn needle, weave in all ends.
