How to Crochet a Slouchy Hat: Step-by-Step Guide with Yarn and Hook Requirements

You’ll Need

1 ball of Lion Brand Heartland: Pinnacles [136-178] yarn;

Crochet hook 6.5 mm;

Large-eye needle.

Instructions

Start by making the initial chain. This will be the height of your hat. If you want a slouchy hat, use a 6.5 mm crochet hook and chain 40 sts.

Single crochet into the 2nd chain from the hook and then into each chain.

Chain 1, turn, and then single crochet into each stitch.

Repeat crocheting rows until you're satisfied with the length.

Length Measurement

Make 60 rows, which is about 45 cm. The number of rows you crochet will determine the circumference of your hat; the best way to measure this is to tie some yarn around your head and use this as a guide.

Remember, your crochet will have some give in it, so make sure to take this into consideration.

Fasten off the end of your yarn. You should now have a rectangle made up of rows of single crochet, measuring 32 cm by 45 cm.

Assembling the Hat

To make your hat, you need to create a simple tube and gather it at the top.

Thread some yarn onto a yarn needle and whip stitch the side edges together to form a tube.

Sew in and out through the stitches at one end of the tube. Pull the yarn to gather the top and tie it tightly.

To finish, weave in the ends. You may need to sew the top to close the hole completely.
