3 meters Coloured Yarn (I have used Circulo Amigurumi Yarn)
8 meters Contrasting Coloured Yarn
10 meters Cream Yarn
3 mm | D Crochet Hook
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
Gauge: 19 stitches and 10 rows to measure 10 x 10 (4x4in) over dc sts.
Size: 8cm x 8cm granny square.
Notes
The Granny Square is worked in the round. The Butterfly is created first using Front loops. The Granny is added using the Back loops.
Crochet Stitches
To make my crochet Butterfly Granny Square, you will be using a few crochet stitches including: Magic circle, Double Crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (sl st), Dc Cluster stitch, Front Loop, Treble Crochet (tr), Picot.
How to Make a Crochet Butterfly
Row 1
(First Coloured yarn) Make a magic circle, *chain 3, add a dc cluster into the magic circle, chain 3, sc into the magic circle* repeat * to * 3 more times, sl st into the magic circle, close magic circle. Fasten off and weave in your ends. Total: 4 Cluster stitches.
Row 2
(Contrasting Yarn), Attach the yarn to any FRONT LOOP sc stitch. Chain 1 (count as a heightening stitch), sc into the same stitch, IN THE FRONT LOOP ONLY [5tr, picot (chain 2, sl st into the second from the stitch), 5tr] into the front loop the next cluster stitch, sc into the next sc – First front wing complete, IN THE FRONT LOOP ONLY (5tr, picot, 5tr) of the next cluster stitch, sc into the next sc – Second front wing complete, IN THE FRONT LOOP ONLY (5dc, picot, 5dc) of the next cluster stitch, sc into the next sc – First back wing complete, IN THE FRONT LOOP ONLY (5dc, picot, 5dc) of the next cluster stitch – second back wing complete , sl st into the first sc. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
To create the body of the Butterfly, using the first coloured yarn, surface chain from the center base of the motif (in between the two smaller wings), to the top – I have made 5 chains in my example, without cutting the yarn, chain 4, sc in the second from the hook, 2 slst – creating the first antenna, sl st into the centre of the butterfly, chain 4, sc in the second from the hook, 2 slst, sl st into the final surface chain. Fasten off & weave in your ends.
Crochet Butterfly Granny Square
Attach the cream yarn to any back loop sc from Row 1.
Row 1
*Sc in the back loop, chain 3, skip to next cluster stitch* repeat * to * 3 more times, sl st into the first sc.
Row 2
Chain 3 (count as dc), dc in the same stitch *3 dc, (dc inc, chain 2, dc inc.)* repeat * to * 2 more times, 3 dc, dc inc. into the first stitch, hdc into the top of the first dc. Total: 28 dc.
Row 3
Chain 3 (count as dc), dc into the chain space, *7 dc, (dc inc., chain 2, dc inc.) in ch-sp* repeat * to * 2 more times, 7 dc, (dc inc., chain 3) in ch-sp, sl st into the first dc. Total: 44 dc. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
