Yarn: 80g of Big Twist Value Yarn in Sky Blue and White (medium weight)
Hook: 5 mm hook
Other Tools: Scissors, Yarn needle
Step by step Pattern
1. Base of the Bag:
Create Slip Knot:
Place the yarn over your hand with the tail end at the bottom.
Form an X around two fingers and hold it with your pinky.
Insert your hook under the first part of the X, over the second part, and pull it through. Remove fingers and tighten the knot.
Chain 41:
Yarn over, pull through to create a chain. Repeat until you have a total of 41 chains.
Half Double Crochet (hdc):
Yarn over, insert hook into the second chain from the hook.
Yarn over, pull through, you now have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all 3 loops.
Repeat hdc:
Continue hdc in the next 6 chains (total of 7 hdcs).
Change Color:
In the 8th hdc, switch to white yarn by finishing the stitch with white yarn (pull through 3 loops with white).
Carry Yarn:
Continue hdc in white for the next 8 stitches, carrying the blue yarn along as you stitch.
For the 8th white hdc, switch back to blue yarn.
Alternate Colors:
Repeat this pattern, alternating colors every 8 stitches, ensuring to carry the unused yarn along.
End Row:
Continue to the end of the row. Do not switch to white on the last hdc; finish with blue.
Chain One, Turn:
Chain one and turn your work.
Continue hdc:
Repeat the pattern, this time working into the existing V stitches, ensuring blue on blue and white on white.
Chain one at the end of each row and carry the yarn along.
2. Height of the Bag:
Start Rounds:
Once you complete the base, turn the rectangle into rounds. Work around the rectangle, starting each round with a chain one and turn.
Change Color Every 4th Round:
After completing 4 rounds of the same checkered pattern (7 hdc in color, change on the 8th), switch to the opposite color.
Continue Pattern:
Repeat until the bag reaches the desired height (16 rounds)
Strap:
Attach Strap Base:
Start on one side of the bag. Chain one and work in rows.
Continue the checkered pattern for the strap, chaining one and turning at the end of each row. Carry the yarn up as you stitch.
Alternate Colors:
Create small checkered blocks (4 rows each, alternating colors), continuing until the strap reaches the other side of the bag
Secure Strap:
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew the strap to the other side of the bag using a yarn needle, ensuring the stitches align correctly.
4. Final Touches:
Weave in Ends:
Flip the bag inside out to hide weaving. Weave in all loose ends securely using a yarn needle.
Reinforcement:
Optionally, line the bag and strap with fabric for added durability.
Finished Bag:
Turn the bag right side out. Your checkered crochet bag is complete!
Ready to use or give as a handmade gift.
Additional Tips:
Ensure that the unused yarn is always carried along to avoid loose strands.
Adjust the strap length as needed to fit your preference.
Enjoy creating your beautiful checkered shoulder bag!
