Pattern Notes

The center portion of the scarf is worked vertically, then the border is picked up all around the outside edge. Finished off with a center ruffle trim worked on top of stitches in the center panel.

Row 1: With Color A, ch 6, join into a ring with sl st, ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 3, 3 dc in ring (shell completed), turn (1 shell)

Row 2: Ch 3, shell in next ch-3 space (the center space of shell on the previous row), dc in top of beginning ch-3, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3, shell in shell, dc in top of beginning ch-3, turn.

Rep Row 3 until 88 rows of shells have been worked. Fasten off Color A.

Border

Rnd 1: Beginning at the short end of the scarf, join Color B at the top of the last shell row in space at the upper right edge, ch 3, in the same space work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) (first dc-corner completed), 3 dc in next space (the center space of the shell on the short end of the scarf), in next space at the left edge work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) (second dc-corner completed), working along the left side of the piece, *3 dc in next space, repeat from * to the last space on this side, work dc-corner in the last space, 3 dc in the center space at the base of the shell on the short end of the scarf, work dc-corner in space at the left edge, **3 dc in next space on the side of the piece, repeat from ** to the beginning of the round, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off Color B (85 3-dc groups along each long side, 2 dc-corners and one 3-dc group at each short end)

Rnd 2: Beginning at the short end of the scarf, join Color C in the corner space at the right edge (in the same corner where Rnd 1 started), ch 1, in the same space work (sc, ch 3, sc) (first sc-corner completed), ch 3, *skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, repeat from * to next corner, in corner space work (sc, ch 3, sc) (second sc-corner completed), ch 3, **skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, repeat from ** around, working sc-corner in each corner, join with sl st to beginning sc. Fasten off Color C (131 ch-3 loops along each long side, 2 corners and 5 ch-3 loops along each short end)

Center Ruffle Trim

(Note: To work around the base of shells more easily, fold the piece down row-by-row in order to pass the hook from right to left through spaces on either side of the shell base.)

Hold the scarf horizontally with the front side facing. Working from right to left along the center of the strip, join Color D by inserting the hook in and out of center spaces at the base of the first shell, yo, pull loop through, ch 1, in the same place work (sc, ch 3, sc), *ch 3, in next shell base space work (sc, ch 3, sc), repeat from * along the entire length of the scarf. Fasten off Color D and weave in all tails.
