Crochet Candy Cane Blanket

You’ll need:

2 x 100g balls each of King Cole Pricewise DK in white, red and green;

Crochet hook 6,5 mm;

Tapestry needle;

Scissors,

Size: 100 cm x 75 cm.

Stitches control: 12 sts x 9 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

Special Stitches

Long SC / Long HDC / Long DC: These stitches are a variation on the traditional ones. The only difference is that they are crocheted one row below the usual one.

Instructions

Blanket

The pattern for the blanket is a repeat of 2 rows.

I used two strands held together to make a thicker yarn for each color.

The order of which I alternated the colors was green, white, red, finishing with a green row.

With 6.5mm hook and green yarn ch78 (or multiples of 6 chains).

Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc, *ch3, sk3, 3dc*, repeat ** until the end of the row.

Change colors to white and turn.

ch3, sk3, *3 long dc, ch3, sk3*, repeat until the end of the row, sl st.

Switch to Row 2: red and turn.

Row 3: long sc in the very first stitch, ch2 (counts as the first long dc), 2 long dc, *ch3, sk3, 3 long dc*, repeat ** until the end of the row.

From this point on, repeat Rows 2 & 3 until you have the desired length and are ready to crochet the final row.

Make sure the final row in the blanket will be crocheted in green.

Final Row: sc in the very first stitch, 2sc, *3 long hdc, 3sc*, repeat ** until the end of the row, don’t turn, don’t cut the green yarn.

Cut the white and red yarns and weave in all the ends before continuing with the border.

Border

I wanted this baby blanket to be festive and cheerful so I chose the Candy Cane Border for it.

To make sure that the border was nice and straight, and also to hide the color transition on the sides, I first crocheted a row of single crochet stitches all around the blanket.

Single Crochet Border

Continue from where you left off with the green yarn and the same 6.5mm crochet hook.

Single crochet 2 stitches per color block (on the sides only), one single crochet in the middle of the color block, one single crochet in between the color blocks.

Once you reach the corner, crochet 3sc in that corner stitch.

When you crochet along the bottom and top of the blanket, single crochet in each stitch.

Finish off with a sl st, cut the green yarn and weave in the end.

Candy Cane Border

For the candy cane border, I used the same red and white yarns with two strands held together, and the 6.5mm crochet hook.

Step 1: join the red yarn to the blanket with a slip stitch in any stitch on the border, ch4, take the loop of the hook

Step 2: join the white yarn to the blanket with a slip stitch in the following stitch, ch4, take the loop of the hook

Step 3: pick up the red loop and push the white chains to the back of your work, sc in the following stitch, ch4, take the loop off the hook

Step 4: pick up the white loop and push the red chains to the back of your work, sc in the following stitch, ch4, take the loop off the hook

Repeat Steps 3 & 4 all around the blanket.

Once you reached the end, sl st the final red loop into the fist red chain you made, and the final white loop into the first white chain you made, fasten off and weave in the ends.
