Complete Guide to Creating Striped Socks Using Worsted Weight Yarn
Complete Guide to Creating Striped Socks Using Worsted Weight Yarn

Materials

Made with worsted weight yarn in two colors, I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn ~100 yards of each color.

Gauge

Hook US I/5.50mm; 8 XSt x 4 Repeats = 4″, Repeat = 2 rows of sc, 1 row of XSt.

Size

US Women’s 8-9

Abbreviations

  • beg: beginning
  • BPhdc: Back Post half double crochet
  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • FPhdc: Front Post half double crochet
  • sc: single crochet
  • sc2tog: single crochet 2 stitches together
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Special Stitch

• Modified XSt – X Stitch – skip next st, dc in next stitch, working around stitch just made, work dc in skipped stitch.

Notes

  • Weave ends as you work.
  • Ch1 at beginning of round/row does not count as stitch.
  • Stitch count is in ( ) at end of the round. Stitch count is same as previous round, unless noted.
  • Work instructions in [ ] as designated.
  • When a number precedes a stitch, such as 3hdc, work that number of stitches in the next stitch.

Pattern written for US women’s sizes 8-9. To adjust length, add or reduce a full repeat of Rounds 5 to 7 before Round 17. To adjust width, add or reduce stitches in increments of 2, evenly in Round 4.

For the striped socks, I made the XSt rows and Rows 27 & 28 in the contrasting color.

Join each round with sl st to first st. Start each round in the join.

Do not fasten off at each color change; instead, carry the unused color along inside.

Make a color change in the last pull-through of the last st before the color change.
