How to Crochet a Shark Puppet




















You’ll Need:
4 ply of grey and white 100% cotton yarn;
Crochet hook 1.25 mm;
Scissors;
Darning needle;
Sewing thread and sewing needle;
A small amount of felt.
Size
Large Shark (Using 8 ply wool): 15.5cm x 9cm or 6” x 3.5”
Medium Shark (Using 4 ply crochet cotton): 10cm x 6cm or 4” x 2.25”
Instructions
Head
Using grey, make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 2 tr in circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1st st, 1 tr in next st, and 1 tr in top of the 3 ch. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 4 ch, 2 dtr in 1st st, 1 tr in each st, 1 tr in top of ch. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 4: 3 ch, a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 5: 4 ch, 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 or 2 dc in each st around. Sl st into 1st st. Fasten off.
Body
Using grey, make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 6 tr in circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1st st, 1 tr in each st and 1 tr in top of the 3 ch. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 3: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1st st, 1 tr in each st, 1 tr in top of ch. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 4: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1st st, 1 tr in each st, 1 tr in top of ch. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 5: 3 ch, 1 tr in each st to last 3 sts, 1 dtr in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Rows 6-9: 3 ch, 1 tr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined tr over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts after row 9)
Rows 10-11: 3 ch, a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined tr over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts after row 11)
Row 12: 3 ch, a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 13: 3 ch, 3 tr in each st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 14: 4 ch, 2 dtr in 1st st, 1 dtr in next st, 1 tr and 1 htr in following st, 1 htr and 1 tr in next st, 1 dtr in following st, 2 dtr in last st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 15: 4 ch, a dtr cluster over 1st 3 sts. Fasten off.
Join cotton in the 4th last st on the other side of the tail.
4 ch, work a dtr cluster over the next 3 sts. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Sl st in each st down tail, 1 or 2 dc in each st around the body to the tail, sl st in each st up to the 1st st at end of tail. Into the end of the tail, work 2 ch and a joined htr and fasten off. Join cotton in st at bottom of joined htr, sl st in next st then work 1 dc in each st around the bend in the middle of the tail and up the other side to st before top, sl st in next st, work 2 ch and a joined htr in top of tail. Fasten off.
Top Fin
Join cotton 15 sts back from tail on the wrong side.
Row 1: 1 dc in 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 2 tr in the following st, 1 htr in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in the following 2 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 4 ch, a dtr cluster over the same st as ch and next 2 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 dc in next st, sl st in each st to end. Fasten off.
Teeth
15 ch.
1st Tooth
Miss 3 ch, a dtr cluster over the next 3 sts. Fasten off.
2nd Tooth
Join cotton in the same st as the last part of the dtr cluster.
3 ch, a tr cluster over the next 3 sts. Fasten off.
3rd Tooth
Join cotton in the same st as the last part of the tr cluster.
3 ch, a joined tr over the next 2 sts. Fasten off.
4th Tooth
Join cotton in the same st as the last part of the joined tr.
3 ch, a joined tr over the next 2 sts. Fasten off.
5th Tooth
Join cotton in the same st as the last part of the joined tr.
3 ch, a joined tr over the next 2 sts. Fasten off.
Large Bottom Fin
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, 2 htr in st, 1 htr in top of ch. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, 2 htr in 1st st, 2 tr in the next st, 2 dtr in following st and 1 dtr in top of ch. Turn.
Row 4: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1st st, 1 tr and 1 htr in the next st, 1 htr in the following st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Fasten off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Using white, make a magic loop.
1 ch, into the circle work 8 htr. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Embroider a black dot on each eye.
Stitch the teeth in behind the head.
Sew the head to the body.
Crochet the small bottom fin on the bottom of the shark as per the pattern below.
Attach the large bottom fin to the shark.
If making a finger puppet, stitch the felt to the shark, leaving it open between the 2 bottom fins.
Stitch the eyes to the shark.
Small Bottom Fin
Join cotton at the bottom of the body under the 2nd last tooth.
5 ch, work a cluster of 1 dtr in the same st as ch, 1 tr in next st, and 1 dtr in following st. Fasten off.
ng sock toe. Weave in all ends.
