How to Knit 1x1 Rib: Step-by-Step Instructions

Knit 1x1 Rib Technique
Knit 3 rows of 1 x 1 rib.
1st Row Instructions
Selvedge stitch, *purl, yarn over* to end of row. Finish depending on even or odd quantity of stitches you need. In the first case, make yarn over; in the second, make yarn over, purl, selvedge stitch. Turn your work.
2nd Row Instructions
Stitches in the previous row that you knit with purls are now knitted as knit stitches, slip yarn overs as purls while the yarn is in front of the loop. Turn your work.
Repeating Rows
Then repeat only the 2nd row. Make 4 more rows (two rows on one side, two on the other side). The quantity of rows can be more; if you make fewer rows, the edge will be very loose.
7th Row Instructions
Selvedge stitch, *purl, slip knit stitch on the auxiliary needle in front of your work, purl, knit the stitch from the auxiliary needle, knit stitch* to the end of the row. Turn your work.
8th Row Instructions
Selvedge stitch, *2 purls, 2 knit stitches* to the end of the row. Turn and knit the needed quantity of rows.
Switching to Double Pointed Needles
After the 7th row, you can change your needles to double pointed needles and knit densely in a circle (cuffs, neck hole, bottom part of your work).
