Tools and Materials:
#4 yarn in main color (I used ILTY in Ivory)
#4 yarn in gray for arrow feathers
#4 yarn in custom colors, one for each child (I used ILTY in “Emerald Pine” for September, “Plums” for July and “Cinnamon Cedar” for November)
H hook (5 mm) for scarf
G hook (4mm) for feathers
yarn needle for weaving in ends
scissors
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
st/ sts – stitch, stitches
hdc – half double crochet
fo – fasten off
scdec – single crochet decrease
surface slst – surface slip stitch
Notes:
The scarf body is created first, fastening off and switching between main color and custom colors for each birth month. At the end of the custom colors, you will leave a long tail to be used for a surface slip stitch down the feather. This creates a unique effect as the custom colors continue into each feather.
*The entire scarf including feathers is 86″ long.

Connect Scarf to Feathers
We will be using the long tails you left for each custom color section.
Insert G hook at the end of a custom color section, right in the center of the two rows.
Pull up a loop of the custom color tail, ch 3. (This helps the feathers hang just a little below the scarf - add more chains if you want them to dangle even more!)
Insert hook in center of the bottom of an arrow, and work surf slst from bottom to top of the arrow, ending right before the tip, fo.
Use a yarn needle to weave the custom color yarn back and forth a few times under the color stitches so it is not noticeable and then cut.
