Help with chain stitch

Hi everyone!
I'm writing to you all pleading for help :(( I've recently gotted into using the chain stitch, but I cant quite get it right. Is there any veteran crocheters here who can send the me link to a easy tutorial, or can explain it to me themselves? i'd really appreciate it!! Currently I'm trying to complete this cute hat using the chain stitch, and i'd love to get it done soon! I've been very frustrated.

When I chain stitch I pick up the material and make sure I don't twist the crocheted yarn and keep it straight and then continue on with my crocheting.
