Special Stitches in Tunisian Crochet

Special Stitches

Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss) - Insert hook from right to left behind a single vertical thread. Yarn over hook, draw loop through and leave on hook; unless otherwise stated, the hook is always inserted in this way.

Tunisian Purl Stitch (Tps) - On the forward half of the row, bring the yarn to the front, insert hook in the next vertical bar, bring yarn to back under the hook, wrap around the hook from back to front, and draw yarn through the stitch (purl made).

Basic Rows

Basic Forward Row

Working into the back loop only of each chain, insert hook into the 2nd chain from the hook, yarn over, draw loop through and leave on hook. Insert hook into the next chain, yarn over, draw loop through and leave on hook. Repeat this in each chain to the end. Don’t turn. The number of loops on the hook should equal the number of stitches required for the first row.

Basic Return Row

Step 1: Yarn over, draw through 1 loop (this chain forms the edge stitch). Step 2: Yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Step 3: Repeat step 2 until 1 loop remains on the hook. Don’t turn. The loop left on the hook is the first stitch of the next row.

Setup Row and Further Rows

Set-up Row: Work a forward and return halves the same as for TSS;

1st Row (Forward Half)

Skip 1st stitch, TSS in the next stitch, *Purl stitch in the next stitch, TSS in the next stitch, repeat from * across;

1st Row (Return Half)

Work off all loops as in TSS;

2nd Row (Forward Half)

Skip 1st stitch, *Purl stitch in the next stitch, TSS in the next stitch, repeat from * across, TSS in the last stitch;

2nd Row (Return Half)

Work off all loops as in TSS;

3rd Row

Skip 1st stitch, insert hook in the next vertical bar, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on the hook (slip stitch completed), slip stitch in each vertical bar across the row, and end off.

Repeat 1st-2nd rows.
